I've now used the GPS a few times for local driving in anticipation of a long road trip in a few weeks. Being familiar with the routes i've so far used the GPS for, I know that the Magellan 1424 picked the best and most efficient route each time.
The first thing I did upon recieving the GPS was charge (by taking a test drive) then update the software. This was a very simple and straight forward activity. I did have some issues with receiving the free map update within 30 days of purchase, but this is still being worked on. I had to verify my date of purchase (via invoice) with Magellan customer service which has been completed and approved. Now, I guess I just have to download the new map.
I have read a bunch of reviews on how the GPS lags your current position by a bit. I did notice this during my first test drive. However, after updating the system this went away. There is no longer any lag between my actual postiion and the position illustrated on the GPS unit.
One of the main reasons I didn't go with a Garmin was that I read a bunch of reviews on how quiet those systems tend to be. I only have the volume set to about 60% and even at that level The Magellan 1424 is plenty loud enough to hear over both wind and radio noise. In fact, the first thing my wife commented on was how easy it was to hear.
The one negative I have noticed so far, is that it's not always easy to understand the spoken street names. I'm not sure if this is an inherent problem with the technology or if it's just an issue with this model. However, after the GPS calls out a street name, I will often have to look at the screen to read the name of the street.
Overall, though, I find it to be a very nice GPS and infinetly nicer than my previous Magellan Maestro that was a couple of years old.

Got it for a upcoming trip. But it's so much fun, I play with it everyday. Use it to go places in town.

This Magellan replaces an older Garmin - BUT - it does more than replacing it.
What an improvement over the Garmin. Clearer display - better voice directions - earlier turn warnings, etc, etc, etc
At $90 for the base unit and $120 with lifetime maps - it is a steal!!!
Recommend - A+++++
We own a Lexus LS430 with a built in factory navigation unit ($2000+) and this Magellan is SO far superior to the factory one - it is an excellent buy.

This GPS works ok. It is a little inconsistent when it comes to giving a route for the shortest time versus shortest distance. I put in a known route for traveling from St. Louis to panama city and it stated the "shortest time" route was to go down to penscacola and then east to panama city with a travel time of a little over 14 hours. Then I put in the same destination and I picked the "shortest distance" and it had me gong down the actual route that I am used to which is the shortest distance and the GPS stated that the travel time was only 13 hours. This route should have been stated as the "shortest travel time". I did this with another destination and it again was inconsistent and did not gve me the route with the shortest time. The bottom line is that it will get you to your destination and this model will give you free lifetime maps and the map upgrade are not cheap if you have to by them. It works good enough and has decent graphics. The unit is not very sensitive and the picture has a lag time of about 20 feet. When it show you coming up to a intersection or overpass you can tell that your position lags by about 20 to 30 feet on the GPS screen. It still is not to bad for the price. If it did not have free map upgrades for life, I would probably look at getting a different brand GPS.

I borrowed my dad's GPS for our family vacation earlier this year and his maps are out of date. I have looked at other GPS units and for the price the Lifetime map updates are worth more than any other feature! The unit is also easy enough that my wife needed it for a road trip she took with her friend and I was able to give her a 5 min tutorial on how to use it and she didn't have any problems figuring it out.
I also made my dad get one as well.
